Thanks for this post, Dave. I loved the reflection on Ernest Bloch's work, and was having a similar conversation about time - where the past takes on new meaning based on our present actions and understandings, and the future is always already being seeded and emerging in the present moment.

I recently read the book 'Joyful Militancy' by carla bergman and Nick Montgomery. In it, they explore the differences in orientation between what they call 'rigid radicalism' - a dogmatic, puritanical stance that can creep into our actions and stifle the liberatory impulse of social change movements. Instead, drawing on a Spinozan ethic, they propose 'joyful militancy' - a stance that is rooted in gratitude, self- and collective awareness of power inequities and oppressive principles and practices, and a willingness to do the work to transform ourselves together to build the worlds we dream of. That, to me, is a hopeful book. Thanks for all your work - and welcome to the Community Economies Research Network! Best regards, Anisah Madden.
